  • Help! .AVI files imported into FCP?

Posted by Jonathan Burks on January 26, 2009 at 3:23 pm

I am working with some .AVI files and I need to make simple edits, but when I render them out in Final Cut Pro the playback is terrible, or I get a codec error. Is this type of file supported by Final Cut Pro and is there a setting I need to change to work with them? Or is there a way I can convert the .AVI files into something better suitable?

    Please Help!

recompress them with compressor…..don’t know the sequence specs you’re working with, but DV NTSC should work

    Is Compressor a separate program?

it should have been installed when you installed FCP. Check your applications folder.

You can rewrap them with Mpeg Streamclip. I forget exact method but I did it to a bunch of clips that I shot with a Firestore FS4-HD and had it set to AVI type 2 and actually needed Quicktime.

Although it is odd, I have been playing with some stock footage I purchased from Footage Firm and it is all in AVI format and after the message FCP gives me the footage works great in the timeline.
