Help! Audio levels being raised
We are laying off to tape FCP w/ Kona 3 HDSDI 1080 23.98 seq, to 1080i29.97 tape, Deck HDW2000. Audio 48 KHz / 24-bit.
PROBLEM audio levels are being raised about 1.3dB. Anyone have an idea why this would have and a possible solution?

In your audio tab, is “Lock Audio Gain To Unity” checked? Do you use your Kona for system sounds?

the problem seems to be something with the deck, the boost in levels does not seem to be when the embedded or AES is monitored but is there when they monitor the deck’s AES via XLR or BNC. We get the same boost when feeding to the deck and playing back recorded audio.

When you go E-E into the VTR, and bring up tone, does it show up at -20dBfs on the Sony meters ? When you record this signal, and then play it back (as a crash record), does it playback correctly (-20) or is it elevated by 1.3dB ?
There are multiple calibrations on the Sony VTR’s – record level, playback level, E-E level, and record confidence level. You should be using embedded audio, not AES. all that matters is your input level (in E-E), and if it’s the same on PLAYBACK, not while you are recording, which may be differnt (that’s the Sony VTR calibration).
Do these tests with tone just coming out of the Kona (FCP) – not doing an “edit to tape”. This is no different that doing an alignment on a bench, using a TONE generator.

There this is the problem with rental decks, one they are hard to learn the ins and outs in a short amount of time you have them and the manuals are not that straight forward, took me a while to figure out how to set the SD out to 16:9.
The Kona outs were dead on, deck meters were -20 with tone coming in. the problem when the audio people were monitoring audio out from the deck to their pro tools systems, there was always a 1.3/1.5dB boost in the levels. On deck playback the meters did seem to be going over -3dB (where the program peak was set.
We sent a QC tape off in the beginning and it passed so this may have to much to-do about nothing. So the deck is going back to the rental house without much chance of finding if or where the problem was. Thanks for you help.
When you go through these things it makes that $300/hr charge for HD layoffs worth every penny of it. Give a hard drive to service bureau and let them do there thing.
