Help – Attack of the ever growing rendered file size

Please help. I just recently purchased Vegas MS+DVD Arch Platinum Ed. I am trying to create a DVD with menu’s with a video file created using the Hauppauge WinTV PVR USB 2.0 (hardware) converter.
I recorded the video using WinTV and the associated Win2000 software using the DVD Extended play (720×480 4.4Mbits/sec 48.0kHz Stereo) that creates an *.mpg file. This file is 4.1 Gb in size.
There are a couple of problems. All I really need is to be able to get this video into the multi-menu DVD Arch format with about 400Mb of extra stuff so they can be burned onto a 4.7Gb DVD. In other words, when DVD Arch imports the file, it needs to see it as < 4.3Gb. So, the issues are this: 1) I must make edits to this file, but they are all trimming and deleting edits; no addition vid. When I import this DVD Extended play file of 4.1 Gb into Movie Studio and attempt to attempt to render before any editing (just to see what the output file size would be), it tells me the 4.1Gb file is now 6.3Gb. This is a problem. Render format is MPEG-2, DVD NTSC and/or DVD Architect format NTSC video only (file sizes are identical with and without the audio) 2) After editing, i've been able to reduce the rendered file size to 4.1 Gb. Great, right? Except that when I import the newly rendered DVD NTSC or DVD Arch format NTSC video only file into DVD Arch and open the DVD Optimize window (under File menu), it tells me that 4.1Gb file is 5.8Gb in DVD Arch. If I could cut down just one of these two file augmentations, I could get the video onto the DVD. Heck, the video is only an hour and 15 minutes long recorded in extended play using the Win2000 software from Hauppauge. Shouldn't I be able to get that video onto a 4.7Gb DVD? Please help!!!!!!!!! First of all, capturing and editing MPEG2 is NOT the best way to do things. Instead, you’d be better off running the TV signal to a convertor and capturing via firewire to standard DV-AVI files. These are meant to be edited.
Be that as it may, your best bet will probably be to render from VMS as DV-AVI and then let DVDA render back to MPEG2 allowing it to get the file size correct. I don’t know what render options are available for MPEG2 in VMS (is there a custom button???) to allow you to reduce the bitrate to be appropriate for the length of your video.

Thanks for the help. The Win2000 software that came with the Hauppauge PVR only outputs in MPEG2 and these DVD standard/long/Xlong play and SVCD formats. Might it be possible to use other software to read the data from the Hauppauge converter? Any suggestions? (also, the Win2000 software does allow me to change bitrate for recording, if that would help).
Also, VMS can output to .avi. I assumed that since the AVI files were so much larger than the MPEG2 files, that my disc size problem would be even worse.
So, you are suggesting (w/o purchasing new software) to take the MPEG2 file from the Win2000, open it in VMS edit and render to AVI or render to AVI then edit and render again to AVI? Then let DVDA ‘fit to disc,’ yes?
Also, i didn’t see anywhere in VMS to change bitrate, only in DVDA.

No, you disk size would NOT be much worse. Yes, DV-AVI will be much larger (roughly 13 Gig per hour). However, the DVD Authoring program will convert that back to MPEG2 at the proper bitrate so that it will, once again, fit on the DVD. If you can’t specify the bitrate in VMS to get the file small enough, I was suggesting letting DVDA set the proper bitrate based on the length of the AVI file.
