I’ve been cutting with FCP for 8 years. I’m on an Avid Adrenaline this week and I’m slowly getting more familiar with it. One thing that is boggling my mind…

I have two video layers. For the top layer I was simply cropping the image, assuming that I would see the bottom video layer underneath where I had cropped. NO! When I crop, the cropped areas of the top layer are black…not revealing the video layer below. This is basic basic stuff but for the life of me I can’t get it to work. What am I missing here?

While I’m at it..I was trying to add multiple effects to a layer and it wouldn’t let me. What am I doing wrong?

    Sorry for these basic questions.

To see the video underneath when you crop, use the Picture-In-Picture effect or 3D Warp. Both composite your video over everything below it. Effects like Resize don’t–they composite over a solid background.

To stack multiple effects, add the first effect, hold Alt+Drag your next effect onto it. This will nest your first effect and apply your second effect on top of it. Look in the help files for “nesting” and you should find more info on it. Avid’s effect handling needs updating desperately.

thx for the super quick response. I’m sure I’ll have more equally simple questions over the next few days!
