  • HELP! – AE in Premiere sizing issue!

Posted by Larry Gomez on March 24, 2008 at 12:41 pm

    Hi:
I rendered out several QT movies that were the wrong size for my HD 16:9 project in PREMIERE CS2. I re-sized the clips in Premiere, played it back and everything looked great. I then rendered it out and PREMIERE did not recognize the fact I re-sized the clips. It rendered them out in the 4 x 3 size that they were originally! Why did PREMIERE not recognize the changes? It seems odd it would recognize all my other keyframes and not those. This is driving me crazy! In addition, my client is expecting this project ASAP and it looks like I will have to re-do my AE project which will be a huge undertaking.
PLEASE CAN ANYONE HELP ME OUT?!!!!!
I would appreciate it so very much!
    Best Regards,
    Larry

Is this an SD project? You have to make sure you keep the same aspect ratios all along. Did you work in AE in square pixels? If you go to your clip in Premiere and do a file>interpret footage, what does it say?

    Vincent:
Thank you! Square Pixels is not highlighted. If I highlight it then Premiere will recognize the sizing keyframes, is that right?
    Thank you!

That is correct if you worked in ,and exported from AE as Square Pixels (which is usually what I do myself). If that’s the case, Premiere may misinterpret the pixel aspect ratio, and so yes, you would have to manually set it to Square.

Keep in mind that all the resizing you did will have to be reset to default as your footage will nopw have the correct size to fill the frame. Also make sure that your export from Premiere is set to widescreen DV (1.2).

Let us know how that works out.

    Hi Vincent:
I’ve right clicked in the project menu on the footage that is giving me problems. I tried square pixels and then 16:9, it didn’t work. I guess I have to re-render the original AE project as I can’t figure this out. Thank you for your help though!

    Larry,

Yes, it looks like you’ll have to render again unfortunately. The best way to do that is to make your composition square pixels in AE, then choose a frame size of either 1280×720 or 1920×1080, depending on the HD format you are working with. That way there won’t any possible aspect ratio confusion, your composition will also look best in AE since it won’t need pixel ratio conversion. Make sure it is interpreted as square pixels in Premiere upon import, it will fit the frame perfectly.

    Vincent:
Thank you again for your valuable input. I have one other quick question.
When I re-do the AE project, do I change the output module in the render menu or go back and change the composition settings?
    Thank you again!

    Larry,

I’m afraid you’ll have to change the composition settings as well (don’t forget any pre-comps), otherwise you’d only be stretching to fit. I would do a 5 second work area and export to make sure it works in Premiere the way you want it.
