  • Help: AE 6.5 Tracker problems

    Hi,

I’m working on a feature shot in mini DV. The film was originally shot at 720X480 59.94i. I’ve uprezzed the footage to 1280X720 and converted the frame rate to 23.976. I’m including this info in case it has some bearing on my tracking problems.

I’m tracking some shots for an effect I want to attach. The comp is 23.976 as is the footage. For some reason the tracker, even though I haven’t asked it to track fields, is providing two key frames for each progressive frame. This isn’t the problem, but again I’m mentioning it in case it helps figure the problem out.

Anyway, the tracker seems to work. But when I apply the track, the objecting I’m compositing jitters. I’ve tried all kinds of things to get a better track including tracking both ways and averaging the tracks, but still get this jumping result.

Any ideas why this might be happening? Anything I can do? Is the tracker in AE 7 any better than AE 6.5?

    Thanks,

    Eric

    Hi Dave,

[Hmmmm…. it sounds to me like you still have two fields for each frame. Did you specifically tell the tracker, “don’t track fields, track the frame”?

And if your comp is indeed at 23.976, how is AE creating two keyframes for each frame of video?

Something’s fishy… and I think it’s your footage. How did you go about converting the 29.97 footage to 23.976?]

The footage is now definitely 23.976. I converted it using Algosuite (an AE plugin). AE sees the footage as 23.976 as does QT if I open the footage in a QT viewer.

When tracking, I did not check “Track Fields”, but when I apply the data to the layer, it shows a second key frame that I can’t access without doubling the frame rate. This is odd. But, I’m not sure that it’s the cause of the jumpiness. Looking at the position graph for keyframes, the two keyframes for each frame have the same value. The unwanted position shifts are occuring between frames.

    Hi Dave,

I checked the footage as you suggested, but get changes only every other step implying 24 fps.

Does anyone know if the tracker from AE 7 is any better than the one in 6.5?

    Thanks,

    Eric
