  • Help Adding ease in and ease out to pan and zoom keyframes

    Hi All: I’m a FCP 4.5 user.
I have recently switched from creating photo motage sequences in After Effects to just doing it all in FCP. . for the added simplicity of staying in FCP. Although, I am disappointed with how impossible it is to get any control over the velocity between keyframes (without using a plug-in like Moving Picture, or Lyric’s PanZoomPro) – to get that natural feel.

FCP offers the ability to ease in / out on a motion path, but not for simple motion like panning and zooming.
Is there a way to manually control velocity in FCP that anyone knows of, or any workaround inside FCP ???

FYI: I have tried Moving Picture and it just seems like you it addes a few unneccesary steps to the whole process. Lyric Pro seems a little overly complicated(too many options). . any other simple plug in? I can’t believe such a robust program like FCP does not include this in the motion tab.
Thanks for anyone that can contribute!
    Best,

That’s it, there’s only the one way and apparently you’ve already found it.

FCP’s motion editor is NOT After Effects. It’s not simple and it’s not direct and it doesn’t offer you any of the control or creative flexibility of AE. If you render out of AE using your native codec, there is no render hit when you come back to FCP so the time involved is a wash.
FCP’s motion editor totally blows, forget it for stuff you already know how to do well in AE .

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

    Bogiesan:
Thanks for the reply. I agree AE offers more robust control overall, but for simple pan and zoom shots. FCP should be sufficent, and they should have finished what they started, which was to add keyframe ability with basic features, like ease in and ease out.
Well, perhaps I’ll end up going back to my AE workflow, I actually love the application. But, in another forum here, I was persuaded by a lot of members to stay within FCP for these type of projects (photo montage).
I’ll try Lyric’s PanZoom Pro one more time, it is not very intuitive to set up clips. .
    Thanks again,

FWIW, there is an easy to overlook control in FCP Ease In/Out option. A second ‘handle’ on the eased keyframe that controls the speed at which the object passes through the keyframe. But even with that controlling Zoom and Pan smoothly at the same time remains a challenge.

BTW, Lyric’s plugin is broken for FCP 5. I was all set to give it a try till I found that out. If someone would write a basic 3D (2.5D) with true XYZ rotation and position all with bezier handles they could sell boatloads of them.
