  • Help achieving this paper effect.

Firstly, i am almost 99% sure this effect had to be made in after effects or something of the like. It is basically a piece of paper, that floats about and things like that…here is an example.

    https://www.templatemonster.com/flash-templates/6228.html

I am very comfortable in flash and photoshop, but unfortunatly my after effects is still being learned. How would i go about creating even 1 of those bits of paper? i am seeing this effect more and more online (i beleive learnflash.com even used it at one point for their intro animation which seems to be gone now) But i have seen NOTHING online regarding it, or anyone else even asking how it was done…So experts…any thoughts???

    Appreciate ANYTHING you can offer.

    Cheers,

It’s very hard to do in AE because the paper curls back upon itself. There’s one plugin that can do that in AE with a layer (Forge Freeform), but it would probably be a real pain to use for this piece, in my opinion. (sorry, Chris Bobotis) Start using 3D in AE for a while and you’ll see that it really has its limitations. Integrating objects in a scene can be a pain once you start getting ambitious.

In my opinion, this piece would have been done using a 3D app, starting at the end and working backwards.

Yea i have attempted such 3d effects before in after effects and did indeed have some issues. But this paper thing is unlike anything i have ever wanted to make. Seeing it though really makes me want to learn how to do it, i really think its a great effect.

What sort of 3d app could do something like that with the blurs and all…just seems like alot to me…and plus integrating seamlessly into flash. Any thoughts?

You can get some curvature by using CC Cylinder wit ha very large radius. For more control and realism you should follow Steve’s suggestions, though. Doing this stuff inside AE can turn out to be a major pain in the lower rear parts. ;O)

I appreciate both of your comments and suggestions! im certainly willing to try anything. I ask again (even though i know this is the AE board) what 3d proggy would you guys think would work best? i would just have no idea, that would be way beyond my comfort zone, heck even AE is lol.

In the 3D app, you’d model the objects, then set up and animate the scene. Then you’d render the scene, probably with motion blur. Then if you wanted to add more blur or other effects, you’d bring the rendered movie into AE. Then you’d convert it to a Flash movie using Squeez or Spark.

For the 3D, you could use Maya, Max, Lightwave, or Cinema 4D. The blurs are not an issue — ease of distortion of the papers may be an issue, but I think all those apps can do that.

You should check out the pages of 3D developers (Maxon, Autodesk, Newtek) and see what is possible.

Most of your 3D apps should be able to do that for you. Takes a little bit of work to make everything nice and clean. The texture (the rough edges) will be just that – a texture. A simple plane with a texture that has an alpha.

The flash end – most likly is importing as an FLV. You gotta keep it short – because your load times go insane. You then shift to a still after that. But just a simple and nice incorporation of several elements…
