    Hey all creative cows,
just trying to get a little advice Re 5.1 mix output from fcp.

Basically im finished with my movie, and before i send it out to the dvd authoring people,
i need to get the 5.1 mix from the guy who did the sound.
whats the best format to get this from him in?
and how do i change my fcp setting so its not a 5.1 stereo down mix to 2.0?
can i export my final MOV ProRes 1280×720 with 5.1 audio from fcp?
or should i send the 5.1 mix seperate to the video as 2 different files down to the dvd authoring people???
anyone who has experience here, would love to hear what you think!

1 more thing, i was told that i only need a 5.1 mix version of the film on dvd, and if you dont have surround sound on your dvd play, it automatically downmixes to 2.o stereo….
    is this true?????
whats the best way to go about this?

thanks to anyone who can shed some light!!

The DVD authoring people should tell you what they want. I would expect them to want the audio as separate wav or aif files clearly labelled, not as part of the quicktime file you supply. If you drop the six tracks into FCP, you will need to set up your sequence audio outputs for multi channel export and map your outputs so that each track has a discreet output. The manual will help in setting that up.

As an audio pro, I always supply a stereo fold down of the 5.1 rather than trust the auto fold down done by DVD players or amps. At some stage, you might need a stereo mix for broadcast so the fold down needs to be compressed & peak limited to be broadcast spec.

As Michael says, you want separate aiff or wave files for thr 5.1. There are a couple of ways to deal with the stereo tracks. Again, as Michael says, you can have a stereo mix from the 5.1. However, your DVD folks might want a Dolby Surround matrix mix which when played withon a Dolby Surround player gives you surround sound, but when played on gear that doesn’t have surround capability, gives you stereo. Dolby Surround is supplied as 2 tracxks called Lt and Rt. LtRt is a compromise and probably isn’t as good a mix as a mix made specifically for stereo. But, the DVD folks may want that.

Here’s a short description of various Dolby options: https://www.dolby.com/uploadedFiles/zz-_Shared_Assets/English_PDFs/Professional/43_audiosource.pdf
