    Hi All

I am about to start digitizing for a documentary but bit confused about the varicam.

The tapes are shot at 30 frames per second and at a sytem frequency of 59.94.

I am digitizing using fire wire- DVCPRO-HD720p 30fps. However not sure if this is the bestodec to goo for. The other codec is DVCPRO-HD720p 60fps.

The client wants the best possible quality. Which codec should I go for.

    Thank you.

The varicam is techinally always recording at 60, but you should use the setting for whatever frame rate you shot it at- in your case 30fps

If the Varicam was set for 30fps, even though it recorded that at 60fps (30 over 60), when you capture via firewire it will capture at 30fps.

Frame rates don’t matter when it comes to quality of the image. 60fps, 30fps, 24fps…the image will have the same resolution, only look slightly different due to the frame rate. 60fps will be VERY smooth and very video like, 24fps very filmic.

When I captured it using DVCPRO-HD720P 60 setting FCP captured at 59.94fps.

It looked and played back fine. Does this mean I will be OK digitizing it this way?

I am a bit worried as I will have digitized 35 hrs of footage by Monday.

    No going back !

    Thanks

well, ideally you would recapture it at 30. You’ll be able to watch and edit the footage, but for delivery (btw, what is the ultimate delivery for this project?) you will have to downcovert to 29.97, likely, using a 3rd party converter, like an AJA Kona card.

    Thanks for the reply.

It is going to be delivered at 1080i 60.

    Cheers
