February 19, 2008 at 4:33 pmThe “Xserve” is still available, but the “Xserve Raid” is not.

February 19, 2008 at 6:17 pmPrediction for next year’s non-NAB announcement… Xserve discontinued and OS X Server Unlimited runs on PC servers.
Think about it… It wouldn’t hurt Mac sales as nobody would buy OS X Server Unlimited so they can run OS X on a $500 PC, and it solves the single vender issue most corporations shy away from. It would get OS X Server into more corporate data centers.

February 19, 2008 at 8:03 pmJust for conversation, the Xserve RAID never received a significant hardware upgrade during it’s product life. It still runs on ATA drives! And the throughput of an Xserve RAID with 14 drives was never great. If you wanted to do uncompressed 1080 HD, you needed at least two RAIDs to achieve the speed needed. That’s like 28 drives!
As far as XSAN 2, I hope that it’s in preparation for Final Cut Server to be introduced soon. It’s a strange time now that Apple has ditched NAB, I don’t know what to expect or when to expect it!

February 19, 2008 at 8:13 pmYes the current Xraid is obsolete compared to others, but let’s not forget when it was introduced it was a the first affordable fibre based mass storage device. When most alternatives where twice the price with fibre drives… Xraid was a breakthrough product. Now that everybody has surpassed it at the same price… job done.

February 19, 2008 at 8:28 pmThey figured since they didn’t have the 100 xserve raids to bring with them to show off there was no reason in coming. Ha Ha. Every year I would just stand in awh over all those drives with all the little led lights flickering. Now all we have is a promise, i’m sure it’s a step above the xraid but not near as pretty.

February 19, 2008 at 8:38 pmPerhaps we ought to get a petition going that Promise promises to include pretty blinking blue lights in its Raid.

February 20, 2008 at 2:26 amThis is great news. I am looking forward to seeing this in action with Leopard, OS X Server, ARD and a higher speed RAID. Sorry to see the ol’ Tiger Tank go, but there’s new heavy iron raining down from the far east at higher speeds and cheaper prices.
