Since the release of FCP X I’m making the transition to AVID. I’ve downloaded the trial (https://forms.avid.com/forms/mctrial) and have been watching the tutorials (https://www.avid.com/US/resources/media-composer-5-getting-started-training). After watching only a handful of the videos I’m happy with my decision. I’d be curious as to how much the traffic on AVID’s (even Premiere’s) website has increased. I’m guessing it’s been noticeable. Anyways, FCP was a pretty good NLE, but as Apple continues to satisfy the masses their professional following will continue to fade. You don’t buy/download an off the lot KIA (FCP X) if your racing Le Mans (Professional Film/Video). What I think is funny is that, from my point of view, part of Apple’s appeal to Joe-Average was that “creative professionals” used Macs. It’s been my idea for years that if I could run Final Cut on a PC I’d use a PC because you can get a PC that can run circles around a Mac for a fraction of the price. And, since all the “creative professionals,” including film/video people, now have the option of using PCs (AVID/Premiere), I’m guessing a large part of Apple’s image and professional consumer base will be lost. Oh well. Anyways, forgive me, and the others who are making the switch, for the inevitable onslaught of newb-type questions.

Is there a way to see the full dimensions of a imported still/photo in the bin? For example, if I imported a still that is 2000×2000, where do I see those dimensions?

    Thanks,
    Dan

If you use File-Import, the Avid will rescale the entire image to the project’s canvas size (either SD or HD, nothing else is possible). If you need to have more resolution (for zooms on stills), you can use Avid’s Pan & Zoom effect. That lets you ‘open’ a still in the timeline, and dynamically scale it if needed.

There is a great BCC filter in the included BCC7 if you buy the boxed version of MC that is fabulous for working with original sized photos and animating them. Much more elegant than Avid Pan and Zoom. Buy the box set because you get Boris Continuum and Red plus other good stuff included. Well worth the small premium and far less than buying them separately later.

Just a short summary given that Job and Dennis gave such great answers:

Anything imported to MC is turned into a video resolution. Depending on the format switch when you imported – either SD or HD.

The Pan & Zoom (avid) plugin allows access to larger than video sized stills specifically for Pan & Zoom movements.
The BCC version (which is bundled with the paid product, along with Sorenson Squeeze) permits easier/more powerful pan and zoom options on stills – but is still linking to the original sizes outside of the software.

    Best,
