June 13, 2006 at 9:36 pmTim, your concept of dropping the hours from the TC conversion from non-drop to drop is interesting. I won’t debate whether it’s technically wrong or not – it’s moot, since it comes down to how you stripe your tapes. The problem is that Premiere can’t assume what the starting TC of the tape is, since it’s arbitrary. It has no choice but to go with the assumption that zero is the starting TC.
The real issue though is the fact that your non-drop material is being displayed as drop. You’ve found the (annoyingly subtle) preference to change it; I think you’ll find that the option will be removed entirely going forward. Bottom line is that the app should always show the native TC & dropness of any clip in the project window. As you pointed out, it doesn’t make sense to convert the TC to the project settings, since it’s meaningless when you go back & look at your source tape.
Ironically, I think you would have found that if you had gone ahead & attempted to capture your footage without that switch on, it probably would have worked anyway. The issue you’re hitting is simply how Premiere ‘displays’ the TC, not necessarily whether it’s actually messed it up…
