Heat wave flying through air?
Hey Everyone,
My intention is to make a bullet like (-missle like actually) thing , flying through the sky , but I want a massive heat “ball” around the tip of the missile (somthing like displacement map.)
The questions is whats the best way to do such a thing
Using particular maybe? emitting little bulges(is that possible?)Would love to hear some ideas ,

I think there is a tutorial here at the cow on a bullet effect – though I can’t seem to find it.
Also, Andrew kramer is working on one as well. That one looks to be a lot more complex, but very realistic.
Of course you should watch the 3 part tutorial here on Displacement maps to get you up to speed.
You can also consider using fractal noise as a displacement map, and masking it off so it only effects a small area. Or if you really want to use particles, you can use the effect called CC Particle Systems 2 or CC Particle world (Both come with AE). They run pretty quickly, where particular might not.

The problem is the heat source is moving in air , on one axis though , but still. its moving so the heat distortion source should move with it , but I dont think things in adjustments layer move with the adjustment layer.What should I do ?

animate the Emitter/particle source (the cross hairs). Particles are emitted from the emitter, so where it moves, the particles follow.
