Heat Wave Effect
Do you guys know how to get that effect?
Imagine a road on the desert and we want that heat wave right above it or even a whole city very hot which we can see a heat wave “distorting” the whole screen.

I had to achieve the same thing last year. I used the “Dent” (or maybe it was the “Drip”) tool in Fusion and got something pretty believable with some soft masking added.

I know the effect you are talking, unfortunately you cannot
achieve that effect effectively in Sony Vegas.
Whenever i want a convincing heat wave effect, i use the
Image Lounge plugin from Red Giant, in After Effects.Steve Rhoden

Here are two suggestions from the Sony Vegas forum. Credit Rory Cooper for the first one and Spot for the second.
#1.
Try using the lava media gen track 2
Colors light grey and dark grey = you don’t want it too harsh
Set layers to max
Frequency x 25 + – y6 + –
Animate offset and progress very slow motion
Add a solid white new track 1 cut a mask for your area from white = “you don’t want the heat everywhere” make this a parent composite multiply mask
The parent track composite select displacement.
Select flip input surface
Drop the opacity of the mask to regulate the amount of the fx
Your video track = 3#2.
Using a height mode on an overlaid track would also create the effect. -
