It could also be windows. If you are using windows 7, start Vegas then click on the volume icon in your taskbar and choose mixer. You might see the volume slider for Vegas is turned all the way down.

On my laptop, plugging in the headphones automatically cuts out the speakers. I don’t see how Vegas could override this and do anything different.

If Vegas is using the Microsoft Sound Mapper as it’s audio device, then it should behave like every other audio application.

All that is in place. As I said, if I go to an internet site and play a video, the audio comes through the headphones and not the speakers when I plug the ‘phones in. But the audio out of Vegas will not make a sound unless I unplug the head phones. So there has to be some setting within Vegas that is the culprit.

I am using Windows-XP.

Do you get the same behavior from the rear headphone jack as well? Most modern systems have one on the front panel and one on the rear. If it works for one but not the other, the problem is most likely in the audio hardware setup (typically a RealTek device) or the software that controls it, not Vegas.

I am working with a Macbook Pro/Bootcamp. The rear hole does not cut out the speaker sound. The front does — but when running Vegas does not produce sound at all. Yes, I have RealTek and I’ve gone there too with no success.

Problem solved: For some reason the headphone jack is only picking up one side of the stereo program, the right side. Vegas seems to be sending the mono signal only to the left side, even though both left and right channels are showing on the timeline. Anyway, by changing ghe “mix” in audio manager so that the left side is pushed, I have audio good enough for the simple voice edits I’m making. No more bothering the natives.
