HDX900 Slow Mo Issues???

Hi

I shot footage in 720p/50p with 50p as my framerate. I loaded it into a finalcut project set to 720p/25p. The idea was to get slowmo. Problem is…it doesn’t display the footage as slowmo. I tried converting the framerate with cinematools to 25p. It did convert it but didn’t play it back as slowmo. Instead it only played back every second frame. Is that a bug?

My question:

How do I get real slowmo without having to go through compressor. In compressor I loose one generation.

What is the best workflow with finalcutpro to get slowmo out of the 50p?

Long time no see!

I just tested this, shooting 720p50 with my HDX. I had success with both Cinema Tools and the DVCPROHD framerate converter.

I ingested the clip at 720p50…just confirm in FCP that the clip is listed as 50 fps in the Vid Rate column. Then I opened the clip in Cinema Tools, chose Conform and chose 25.0 fps. I brought the clip back into Final Cut Pro and was able to use the clip in either a 720p25 or 720p50 sequence (if the sequence is 720p50, every other frame is duplicated, but it still plays in slow motion).

Using the DVCPROHD frame rate converter, I was able to choose 25.0 fps and the clip then played in slow motion.

I’m on FCP 6.0.3. Some earlier versions were not complete in terms of supporting 720p PAL rates.

regarding the Slowmo stuff. thanks for your tests. Did the same and it worked. But I am having a problem after exporting as “current” or any other format. The image stutters. It’s not smooth slowmo. Do you see the same problems?

Hi Richard,

Yes–I tried exporting at Current settings and see the same problems, in both Quicktime Player and AJA TV out to a monitor. Quicktime Player was especially odd with these DVCPROHD clips, sometimes playing them back at full frame-rate, but very stuttered, while other times it would only play back at 4-5 fps.

However, bringing the files back into FCP seems to work fine.

I was able to export from FCP to Quicktime Movie either as Uncompressed 720p25 or ProRes HQ 720p25 1280×720 without issue (Quicktime Player seems to hiccup a tad, but I’ve never gotten 100% clean playback from this application). Note that these much larger files will require a fast array to play back. Viewing the output on a video monitor, the motion is very smooth.

Hope this sheds some light on the issue. There definitely seems to be a bug with DVCPROHD 720p25 outside of FCP. What application/setup are you using to view the clips?
