I think I’m up to speed on all of the discussions regarding intermediate codecs, etc., but I’m trying to wrap my mind around all of the info to reach a solution. I’m using a MacBook Pro 17″/Intel Core Duo running 10.4.8 and FCP 5.1.2. I shoot in 24p using a Canon XH-A1 HDV camera and have purchased a Matrox MXO and an Apple 23″ Cinema Display.

Now, I understand the benefits of using DVCPRO for editing and got the MXO so I could output a near HD signal for monitoring (althought the MXO does not handle 24p at this time, but that’s a different discussion). My questions are:

How can I transcode to DVCPRO? The Kona is out because I’m on a laptop. Will I need the HD-Connect MI or SI from Convergent Media?

Will the Matrox do this in the near future or is it just an output device?

    Is there another solution?

    Thanks,

    Bill Doyle

As of now, the only solution for a laptop user is to capture natively, and then transcode to DVCPROHD in Compressor.

I’ve an article in the second issue of the COW magazine about the way to do this… free download after you register.

The Matrox is and is likely to be only an output device…

    Jerry,

Thanks for the info. I get the COW magazine already so I’ll take a look for this and hope that NAB has a hardware solution for us laptop guys.
