    Hi all!

    I’m thinking about a workflow where one digitizes and edits as DVCPro HD (1080i50) and then doing the online in Uncompressed 10 bit (SD, the show is going to be mastered on SD anyway). Going uncompressed HD is not an option because of budget concerns.

    I’ve been looking for a comparison of JVC’s DVCPro HD codec and Apple’s Intermediate Codec and haven’t been able to find one. Anyone got experience on going from HDV to a I-frame based format for editing? I know for sure that my decklink card can playback DVCPro HD but I don’t know about the Apple Intermediate Codec.

    I seem to recollect that someone qouted Nattress saying that if you edit in HDV and then bump up to uncompressed there will be virtually no difference compared to going uncompressed to start with. Is this true?

    Sorry about the newbie questions, but this time I am. My first HDV project.

    That was me. 🙂

    I have a JVC HD100U and have been meaning to try that out but its been crazy at the post house this week.
    I’ll hopefully get to that sometime late this week and post my findings.

    I don’t know Graeme personally but the guy does know what he’s talking about (being a writer
    of great fcp plugins that are all aimed at online quality output and all)

    I love his Film Effects filters, use them a little bit too much I think. 🙂

    I really hope you get some time over to try it, I am really curios about this. I have something like 4 weeks to preapre my “case”. The guys I’ve been working with are transcoding to DV-Pal so they’re throwing away a lot of information I could use when I grade the footage.

    We do it all the time – edit in native HDV then when you are finished simply drop the finished timeline into a 10 bit uncompressed HD sequence and render, it takes a while but it’s the best way of squeezing as much quality as possible out of HDV.

    I would agree with Steve to a point. I treat HDV the way I treat DV that will be onlined to DigiBeta. Capture/offline in DV. After you lock picture, then use the Media Manager to recompress as uncompressed. Then color correct/title/etc the new timeline. My experience is that this is the best workflow with prosumer formats and FCP

    Steve, thanks – that’s usually the very best workflow. FCP does a very good job of decompressing HDV. I don’t find that 10bit gives any advantage though (over 8bit uncompressed), but uncompressed 8bit certainly does over and above rendering back to HDV.
