Been resting on my laurels lately – my systems are stable but long in the tooth, I suddenly have to join in the new wave and make an HDV peice!
Once I have got Tiger and FCP 5 QT7 & new everything in my dual 2 ghz machine:

Will my HDV timeline play out from decklink as 16:9 anamorphic to the SDI monitors in my suite?

    Hi Mark,

Yes, all DeckLink cards support HDV down conversion on a supported system. Further details regarding down conversion capabilities are available from the technical note Software and hardware down conversion with DeckLink cards.

Or you can display HDV on the timeline to a SD monitor using a Decklink Extreme.

He he that upgrade took me all day! Couldnt get my HDV timeline to play out to SDI during editing with normal decklink, I took the advice given here of using an HD card, its now rockin!

One question: with effects etc the machine is slowing (not slow like the bad old days but I cant face slow again) …. does a dual 2.7 mac make a worthwhile difference to render speed?

    thanks all.

It will help with a 2.7 but HDV can be slow to edit with. Wait until you print to tape and FCP will conform your project.

I did a :30 open for a show and it took 20 minutes to conform the footage before it could output back to the camera. Looked great though.

Just thinking ahead to the future, but I’m currently editing a 1/2 hour HDV doc with decklink extreme. The downconversion looks great for viewing and I’ll be delivering on Digibeta.

When I edit to tape will I have to conform or can I use the Decklink downconversion? Does conform make the quality better?

    Thanks,

    Hi Mark,

Thanks for your praise regarding the web site. Which “normal” DeckLink card were you using which couldn’t play out HDV? Which model of HD card are you now using which works? You shouldn’t need a HD card to play out HDV but I’m glad it works for you 🙂

While a faster machine will always perform better, we have been tracking comments regarding RT performance in FCP5 and have been running some tests ourselves to provide Apple with some definitive information. It may be that performance can be improved with some software updates.
