I have some basic questions about editing with HDV. I’ve edited plenty with SD on my system (FCP 6, G5)

I have a ZIU and would appreciate some help with the following:

1 What is the best way to convert HDV if I’m outputting either to SD or HD (assuming I shoot in HDV as most seem to suggest)

Someone at a seminar suggested to me capturing in HDV, then exporting using compressor – to conver to DVC Pro HD, or Apple Pro Res (for HD output). Do you recommend that? Or is it far better to have a Kona card (which would obviously mean more expense) to convert HDV material from the camera? Or is there not much difference between the two?

What about if I’m outputting to SD? – same question – Compressor or what?

2 Here’s what looks like a really dumb question, but don’t know the answer to it and haven’t found it on web:

what happens if, say, I have shot in HDV, and then when I’m capturing, simply set the sequence and capture settings to SD – do I then get material actually in SD in the system to edit with?

And what if I set the sequence and capture settings to Apple Pro Res, or DVC Pro HD – would I actually get material to edit with in these formats? (I somehow doubt it – but want to clarify this)

    thanks in advance

[Francis Mead] “Someone at a seminar suggested to me capturing in HDV, then exporting using compressor – to conver to DVC Pro HD, or Apple Pro Res (for HD output)”

Takes a long time and a lot of rendering.

[Francis Mead] “Or is it far better to have a Kona card (which would obviously mean more expense) to convert HDV material from the camera?”

MUCH better since the conversion is done in realtime while you capture. No waiting. We convert all our HDV material to DVCPro HD during ingest.

[Francis Mead] “What about if I’m outputting to SD? – same question – Compressor or what? “

Kona card realtime downconvert to SD.

[Francis Mead] “And what if I set the sequence and capture settings to Apple Pro Res, or DVC Pro HD – would I actually get material to edit with in these formats? (I somehow doubt it – but want to clarify this) “

No idea what you’re trying to ask here.

If you simply change the Sequence to ProRes or DVCPro HD but you have HDV material, each clip will have to be rendered before you can edit with it. Very slow and the image quality will suffer.

Thanks Walter that’s very clear – but a couple of more questions – having read this thread: HDV Workflow with QuickTime
by Alec Hawkes on Jul 24, 2008 at 5:26:27 pm

is there a further option – ie ingest and edit as HDV, then export as Apple Pro Res or DVC PRO HD?

Also, one other question – if I have ingested from HDV to SD using a Kona card, and then later realise I want to output an HD version of that – what are my best options?

    thanks

[Francis Mead] “is there a further option – ie ingest and edit as HDV, then export as Apple Pro Res or DVC PRO HD? “

We don’t do this option so I have no idea how good / bad that would look. The rendering time alone would prevent me from considering this option and I can’t imagine it would look as good as the Kona card conversion.

[Francis Mead] “Also, one other question – if I have ingested from HDV to SD using a Kona card, and then later realise I want to output an HD version of that – what are my best options? “

Recapture the timeline in HD from the original tapes. We always work in HD if the original material is HD, even for SD projects as it’s just so easy to do that and then output an SD downconvert via the Kona. Then we’ll make an archive copy of the same timeline in HD just in case it’s needed down the road.
