HDV with NTSC Widescreen Output

Don’t know what you are doing wrong but I just finsihed a similar project. Shot in HDV (NTSC) caotured in HDV (m2t I think) in Vegas 8.1. Project properties set to match the footage (which was all the same BTW)Matched project setting by using the little file icon and choosing a media clip. I then did all my editing which consisted mainly of a few cuts and dissolves and significant color correction through the entire project (a little over an hour in length) all done with HD time line. Then rendered to SD DVDA compliant Mian Concept MPEG 2 video stream and separate AC3 audio. The resultant file turned out great. I left it interlaced as it is destined for television viewing. Viewed on PC there is some evidence of interlace artifact (not much) which I AM HOPING will resolve when played on television. Have not had time to burn the DVD yet so ultimate satisfaction not achieved but looking good so far.
BTW it took LESS THAN REAL TIME to render the video on my i7 box. This was my first render on this box and to say the least I am impressed.

You apparently have some stills that you are using. I would take any event that was not the original video and do pan and crop and right click and select match output aspect.

Set Project “NTSC DV Widescreen (720×480)” (not HD). Render MPG2 to “DVD architact NTSC widescreen video stream” and that should do it.
I routinely use those setting for editing AVCHD and M2t footage and producing widesreen DVDs.

PS. Also set DVDA to: Properties-> Ascpect ratio-> 16×9

Thanks so much for the few responses but, unfortunately, I’ve followed the counsel and still not been able to fix the problem. I’ve noticed, however, that when I “save snapshot to file”, it’s saving a JPEG and the attributes of that JPEG are 655 X 480 and not 720 X 480; although that, in and of itself, won’t correct the entire mismatch problem (I think). If you take a look at the video, which I’ve now enabled to be viewed as an embedded file, you can see how the video switches back and forth, like the video is being squished. Thanks for the help, guys.

In your original post you said:

That should not be happening. If your project is NTSC Widescreen and you set your preview to Best (Full) and use Snapshot to File, you should get a 873×480 PAR 1.0000 JPG file. If your snaps are 655×480 this is your problem. It’s too thin and getting stretched back out to widescreen.

One thing to be clear about is that Snapshot to File uses the resolution of your video preview. If it is not set to Full, you will get less resolution. It sounds like your project was set to NTSC DV and not NTSC DV Widescreen when you did the snaps. That’s the only way they would be 655×480. You need to redo them at the full project resolution to fix the problem.

Thanks men for the valuable input. John your input fixed most of my problems, although I didn’t realize I had multiple issues. Specifically, I didn’t know that “Snapshot to File uses the resolution of your video preview. If it is not set to Full, you will get less resolution.” Well, I started from scratch following your counsel and that worked very well(thank you). After that, however, I still had inconsistency with the transitions (hard flash) and other media (solid white) in that the rendered video would go back and forth from one video screen size to another (very undesirable). After spending more time with the project, I realized that each clip of my HDV video had to be set to 16:9 Widescreen mode which I originally thought the software (Sony Vegas) did automatically if your project settings were set accordingly — but it doesn’t. I then followed John and Terry’s advice, rendered using the “DVD archchitect NTSC Widescreen Video Stream” and that helped too. But, the first time I didn’t have audio and learned through multiple attempts that you have to choose the “custom” option and then check the box that says “include audio.” That fixed that problem. Finally, there’s another box during the rendering process that I clicked with seemed to help a lot… “Stretch Video to Output Frame Size.” All of this input from you guys really helped me get my project on track and I really appreciate the forum for being a great source for guidance. Thanks again guys!
