HDV with FCP5 and a Sony HVR-M10U help
Posted by Y12video on March 20, 2006 at 6:15 pmI’m trying to digitize some HDV 1080/50i footage into FCP5. I have figured out the capture and sequence settings enough for the computer to communicate via firewire to control the deck and read timecode, but I still cannot see the picture on Log/Capture or see the audio meters responding.
Can someone tell me what settings I need to fix? Thanks.

Thanks!

Ahem…
This is for digitizing 1080i 50 (PAL) HDV footage from a Sony HVR-M10U deck via firewire into FCP5.
The settings themselves were not that difficult, however I did have to reboot the Mac a few times to get everything to jive just right. Let’s just say that being hot-pluggable does not mean that it will work correctly the first time.
Under A/V Settings:
Sequence Preset to HDV – 1080i50
Capture Preset to HDV
Device Control Preset – Sony HDV 1080i50 Firewire (This showed up after connecting the deck and rebooting.)I then set my video playback to Apple firewire NTSC 720×480 (which worked fine for display on my external monitor).
Finally, with numerous reboots and a little luck, FCP saw everything at once (TC, video, and audio.) There was a bit of a lag between what was on my external monitor and what was on my FCP Log/Capture screen. I assume this was because of the firewire.
Now as for the deck’s settings. I had to manually switch it to 50i and HDV. This was crucial to getting Final Cut to see everything as well. You’ll find those options in the menu of the deck. I turned iLink Conv off. I made the downconvert option Letter Box (I guess that’s a personal preference.) That should be everything.

Yes it’s useful for other people!
Im not sure… but can you use the HVR-M10 to monitor FCP while you’re editing?
I know for sure that this is NOT possible with the cams.. but I’m not sure about the deck…thanks!
