    HDV is MPEG-2….AVCHD is MPEG-4.

HDV is mostly on tape, while AVCHD is a tapeless format.

HDV can be edited natively in FCP. AVCHD needs to be converted to AIC or ProRes.

Given the choice I’d choose AVCHD over HDV any day. There is artifacting in HDV that drives me nuts.

    Thanks Shane

I heard that pro rez doesn’t hold the time code if you need to re digi? I guess I would have to have lots of back up drives to keep the footage. Well the canon is 4k and the panasonic 150 is 5k and the HVX200(dvcpro HD is about 5k to but really expensive to shoot because of P2 cards. Budgets are tight and people want you to come out for nothing. Maybe it would be better to buy an DV camera panasonic or sony dvcam and work for there. If the footage has to be downconverted anyway for DVD out put then why go crazy. Alot of people for corporate are doing HDV stuff. Well it might be good also to do HDV and then transfer the footage to dvcproHD before I edit. What you some thoughts about that? But it sounds like its a nightmare even to capture HDV. A buddy of mine does wedding videos and with about 5 hours of footage a week he said he has never had any problem to capture via firewire, the rendering takes for ever. How long would it take to transfer all the avcHD footage before the edit? what do you think?

    Hey Walter

This is what I found on Creative Cow. Just wondering, You mentioned you can redigi with pro res.

“many people do because they don’t like working with HDV’s long-GOP files, not because they have to. However, compositing HDV in AE is not great, as HDV does get hit with rather massive compression at every step. So, if I were you I would capture as Pro Res using Chris Poisson’s tutorial at https://library.creativecow.net/articles/poisson_chris/hdv-prores.php.

Much of the documentary work I’m doing these days is HDV edited using precisely this workflow. The quality is superb, but keep in mind that recapturing is not possible using this method, so you might want to back up your media files to another firewire drive if that concerns you. ”

Am I missing something, just trying to make sence out of all this. What is your experience?

We don’t use Chris’ method to transcode via Firewire. We use our AJA Kona hardware to make the conversion for us. All media retains timecode. We could not work without proper timecode.

So I guess you use component out of your deck or DVI and not firewire. Would there be issues with the firewire? is there some kind of converter from firewire (camera) to (converter) to aja LHe to allow me to get the component or dvi into aja? What would your settings be in FCP using your method? thanks so much.

    >How long would it take to transfer all the avcHD footage before the edit? what do you think?

It’s pretty quick..and all depends on the computer you have. It took my MacBook Pro about 30 seconds for a 1:10 clip. A MacPro will be faster.

[johnsabbath d’urzo] “Would there be issues with the firewire? “

Yeah…you cannot recapture as ProRes exactly the same way the second time, if you ever lost a hard drive. Or need to capture again at a future date.

[johnsabbath d’urzo] “is there some kind of converter from firewire (camera) to (converter) to aja LHe to allow me to get the component or dvi into aja?”

No, but there is one that will allow you to convert firewire to RS-422 and SDI…and your Kona has SDI. It is called the Congergent Design Connect SI, and I use that daily.

[johnsabbath d’urzo] “What would your settings be in FCP using your method?”

    AJA Kona ProRes 422 1080i29.97.

If I use the converter from firewire to SDI would I be able to recapture AJA Kona ProRes 422?

    Shane

So you use the deck for HDV palyback – firewire – Congergent Design Connect SI, – kona SDI -capture at prores and everything is fine. is this correct?

[johnsabbath d’urzo] “If I use the converter from firewire to SDI would I be able to recapture AJA Kona ProRes 422? “

As long as you route it thru the Kona, and you have the latest (or even a few updates ago) drivers installed. This is what I do all the time from the M10U HDV deck. It has FW out, and component out, but no SDI. I use this via the firewire connection and capture as ProRes 422.

Now, don’t quote me on if this works with a camera…I haven’t used it with a camera so I cannot vouch for how well it works.
