HDV to standard def workflow…..
Posted by Adrian Zehn on February 26, 2007 at 6:23 pmHi,
I am going to be onlining a show that was shot in HDV 1080i29.97.
The OFFLINE editing was done in photo jpeg.
I will need to uprezz all the footage and graphics and produce a final version for broadcast on standard definition (Digibeta).
Any suggestions as to the best workflow?
At what point should we convert the HDV footage to standard def 4:3? I am hesitant to do this during capture as I don’t know how the image will be cropped / positioned etc – I suspect some footage will have to be manually resized / positioned to make it work for 4:3.
We are using Kona 3LH cards.
Thanks in advance,
AZ

February 26, 2007 at 6:36 pmKona 3 or Kona LH? Those are two separate cards…no such thing as the 3LH.
I am guessing from your post that you don’t want it to be letterboxed? Did you shoot with this in mind? With the Kona cards (if you have the LH then you can capture component, if you have the 3, then you have SDI in only and will need a converter box), you can capture uncompressed 8-bit SD (10-bit is still broken) as letterboxed, or as 4:3 cropping off the sides I believe.
Capture as 8-bit uncompressed SD…color correct…output.

February 26, 2007 at 6:45 pmHi Shane,
Ok….I checked….it’s an LH card….with component outputs…..
Again……my concern with capturing at 4:3 is that I will almost certainly need to reposition and possibly resize some shots manually for the best 4:3 results…… Unforunately the show cannot be letterboxed. I believe that it was more or less shot with 4:3 in mind – but I think that this was not always strictly adhered to.
So, I think I need to get the footage into the computer at some sort HD high res format (16:9). Then resize in FCP manually where necessary. Then convert to SD – either with the Kona card or via some other method (Compressor?).
Another complicating issue is that the first episode of this show has been uprezzed using firewire and the HDV codec. I’m not sure whether we can use this material or if we need to ditch it and start again.
Thanks for your prompt response to my first post!

If I colour correction occurs in HD and then the project is converted to SD via the Kona card on output, will the levels still be broadcast legal on my SD output or could the levels shift during the conversion?

February 26, 2007 at 9:17 pmAnother issue related to this project…..
Are there any issues with capturing HDV footage with the AJA Kona codec DVCProHD1080i?
For media storage and speed issues I may have to use DVCProHD instead of uncompressed…..
Does anyone have experience with this conversion and are there any issues I should look for?

February 26, 2007 at 9:37 pmIf the footage was shot 4×3 safe, I would suggest converting during capture (to save rendering) and then decide what, if any, shots you need to pan & scan based on composition. Then just re-capture the shots you need with an HD codec. I use After Effects for pan & scan but FCP will work. Of course, if most of your shots need manual cropping, It would make more sense to capture uncompressed or DVCPro-HD and then do the crop. It’s a re-render either way.

I assume you meant “downrez”?

Nope, no issues at all and this is the workflow I highly recommend. I’m cutting an episode right now shot HDV 1080i/60 and we captured it all to DVCPro HD 1080i/29.97 through the Kona. It’s a very easy workflow.

February 26, 2007 at 10:00 pmI capture from HDV directly to 1080i DVCproHD and just scale that down for SD. You have to render it, but you can also pan and scan and zoom on it. It works great. I don’t offline anything in this workflow though, so as far as managing a batch list for your capture you’re on your own.

February 26, 2007 at 10:02 pmHey…
Thanks for the reply….
Actually I do mean ‘uprezz’ as the offline was done at photo jpeg…

Anyone know anything about colour correction with this workflow…..
If I colour correct in my DVCProHD timeline, and then output to SD using the Kona card, will my colour corrections that appear broadcast legal in my timeline, still be legal on my SD tape?
