I’ve seen some references to this issue, but nothing that answered it for me dead on…

I’ve got a ton of HDV footage that I’ve captured as native HDV into FCP. I want to make an SD copy of every captured file for offline editing on an older machine.

Is there any way to get a decent quality down-convert that doesn’t take up any more space than the original file?

I know DV and HDV technically run at the same data rate and take up the same amount of space…but when I try exporting in a DV codec, it looks like crap (I assume because it’s re-compressing the footage at 5:1). If I export as Uncompressed 8-bit, it looks great, but takes up 4 times as much space.

I don’t know why I naively assumed I could pull a DV conversion out of the HDV without any additional compression, but it looks like I can’t.

Is there a type of compression anyone can recommend that might allow me to have my cake and eat it too? Or, is there a way I can just re-capture all the footage a second time as DV (capturing using Sony FX-1 as a deck, set to make a new clip at each cut point…so as long as I keep my tapes straight, it should all sync up, no?….)???

Now I’m really starting to sound crazy. Someone help!

    Hi Noah,
PhotoJPEG at 75% is 422 keeping much better quality than DV and making smaller files.

Hey, that was an awesome tip. The file size is virtually the same as my original clip, and the quality, except for some additional bluriness during quick motion, looks almost as good to the eye as the Uncompressed 8-bit clip I made!

I’m going to be using an old Mac version of Premiere 6.5 to do the offline…it shouldn’t have a problem eating the Photo-jpeg clips, should it?

PhotoJPEG is a jewel. No problem to use it with PP.
You can improve the look of your picture with some Chroma-Smoothing/Chroma-Sharpening filter.
Have a look to the Nattress Film Effects. It works great when your footage is 411/420 and you render with a 422 codec.
    Cheers,
