Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy HDV to SD DVD

  • Posted by Dominic on July 13, 2005 at 1:28 pm

I recently made a standard def DVD using HDV footage. I kept the bit-rate high (at least 6.8Mbps) for the encoding in Compressor 2 and despite various attempts (with VBR, etc) it always looks absolutely AWFUL.
I’m using Final Cut Pro, Compressor 2 and DVD Studio Pro 4. Any one got any good compression techniques for downconverting HDV for quality output on a SD DVD? My SD stuff allways looks fine.

A big thanx to all the people that helped me with my last question. I’m convinced this forum saves peoples careers!

I’ve recently been doing some tests to answer this very question.

    Conclusion: Avoid Compressor.

Use Quicktime Conversion. Animation codec. Highest quality, of course. In the “Size” field, enter the appropriate dimensions (i.e., 720 x 576 for PAL). Use BitVice to encode the MPEG, selecting 16×9 flagging. If your Dolby a.pack app has disappeared with the installation of Compressor, use Compressor to create just the .ac3 file.

Test this yourself with 2 seconds of footage converted by Compressor (various codecs) and Quicktime Conversion (various codecs). Re-import to FCP. View at 400% or 800%. Animation still looks the best.

    Cheers.

Try downscaling by using QT Export Motion JPEG A, then after export MPEG 2, it’s better.
May be there is better solution, but this one is acceptable.
