    I will be on-line editing a 60 min documentary originally shot on HDV 1080i, using a Kona LHe card. I’ll deliver a DVCPRO HD tape for color correction, and final masters will most likely be on DVCPRO HD tape. The program has very little graphics or animation.

    Should I ingest the original HDV source material using the DVCPRO HD codec, or is there any benefit to using the PRO RES 422 codec?

    I can either capture using Firewire HDV to PRO RES 422, or use HDSDI to either codec. Any significant difference in image quality?

    If you are going to be outputting to DVCPRO HD tape, then you should capture the HDV as DVCPRO HD. ANy benefit you get from ProRes will be thrown out the window as soon as you output to DVCPRO HD tape.

    Capturing to ProRes definitely keeps the graphics cleaner. We output to two Panasonic 1400 DVCPro HD decks and we switched over the ProRes workflow for the cleaner graphics and to work in the full raster frame size.

    Thanks for the advice. I’ve had trouble recapturing HDV in the past, so now knowing that both codecs will yield very similar results, I’ll choose the ingest process that’s the easiest.
