  • HDV to DV back to HDV?

Posted by Robert Schwieger on March 12, 2008 at 5:58 pm

I’m having an issue with a project, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I shot with a Sony V1U in HDV and the client asked for an SD version with the possibility of having a HD version as well.

I imported the footage in FCP 6.0.2 using the HDV format.

My sequence settings were set for regular dv ntsc where I did my editing. Now I can export it as DV but is it possible to get all the work I’ve done back into a HDV sequence setting so I can export the project as HDV?

I tried copying and pasting it into a different sequence and it gets really messed up. Are there any work arounds that anybody has had success with?

    Thanks

    Robert

Well, first, for next time just work in HD no matter what the client wants. When you’re done you can always export an SD or an HD version from that sequence. This way, as you’ve found, you’re stuck with SD.

But that doesn’t help you with this problem. For this, I would usually suggest a cut/paste action, but you’ve already tried that. Explain what “messed up” means when you’re talking about the footage. Maybe we can figure out what’s happening there.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly!

What I meant by “messed up” was- when I copy/paste work from a DV sequence into the HDV sequence the footage is squished in the canvas. I’m assuming it will export the same or can I adjust the canvas settings?

Also I’d tried copy and Pasting the footage and then clicking on an individual clip and selecting

If you’ve done a lot of motion tab effects, like resizing, this won’t help, but try this.

Create a new sequence that matches your original HDV footage.

Go to your original sequence, select all the clips, Copy them then paste them into the new HDV sequence.

Select all the clips in the new HDV sequence, then go under the MODIFY menu and select “Conform to Sequence” I think it should do it.

If it doesn’t, UNDO and “try scale to sequence.”

If those options are greyed out it’s because there are transitions that are highlighted also.

Another option (if you don’t have a lot of motion tab effects) is to select everything in the HDV timeline and under the EDIT menu choose REMOVE ATTRIBUTES. When an option dialogue comes up check Basic Motion and check Distort, that will return everything to its original HDV size and aspect ratio.

    I hope that helps.
