My company has an HVR-Z1U Camcorder with an HVR-M10U VTR in addition to JCV d-9’s and Betacam SP camera and decks. They have just installed a SAN network and want to start doing thier shows 8 Bit uncompressed.

Does it make sense to digitize the footage from the HVR-Z1U Camcorder as 8 bit uncompressed. It is still only going to be DV quality, correct?
Even if we take it in RGB instead of firewire, you’re going to get any better quality then the DV that it was shot it.

I think I answered my on question and kind of knew the answer before posting this, but I wanted other points of view.

    Thanks

The Z1U shoots HDV as well as DV… so HDV captured as uncompressed 8 bit NTSC will look better than if it was material that was shot DV.. What you’ll gain in either case is colorspace. Graphics, titles etc will look better in 8 bit uncompressed than if you’d captured DV material as DV then edited DV.

Just finished a show that was a mix of sources, Beta SP, Digibeta, DVCAM (shot with my Sony Z1U). I digitized the DVCAM in from my Z1U via component cable through BMD card 8bit uncompressed. The difference was noticeable compared to digitizing it via firewire. I had done some testing prior to the edit to determine which codec I was going to work in to avoid having multiple codecs in the timeline.
