    Hello friends,

    I was just asked by a friend to do some quick Color work on an HDV short project (20 minutes) that needs to deliver on regular DVD & possibly BluRay. What I did not know is that this person knows very little about FCP : (!

    I recommended that they conform everything based on standards for COLOR i.e. reducing everything to one video track in FCP, one format for footage (HDV 1440 29.97), removing anything non-color friendly (filters), etc

    BUT my question is whether I can send it straight from this FCP sequence to color just because the compressor tab is set to ProRes or if I should media manage or even just export out of FCP and re-inmport / re-blade and send to Color.

    Consequently my other question is if I should paste the locked edit into a 1080i ProRes hq sequence and follow the same procedure above render out a quicktime at ProRes to re-blade and send to color – the delivery again is DVD & if possible BluRay not HDCAM so I assume this is not really necessary.

    Any help would be great as we are days away from delivery.

    Edit in Native HDV if indeed that’s what you’ve captured. Send that sequence to color. Color will open it, but it will not export AS HDV. Rather it renders to ProRes. From there, you can make an SD DVD or a Blu-Ray disc.

    As far as the filters go, there’s no real need to delete them before you send to Color. Instead, they’ll just be ignored by Color except for Motion Tab and CC 3-Way filters. When the sequence is sent back to FCP, those filters will be there to adjust or delete as necessary. This is the proper workflow, and it’s a snap actually.

    Prepping complex multilayered sequences should be done probably, but you’ve not stated you have that going on..

    Hey Jerry

    I forgot to ask you what the project settings in Color will look like…when i send the sequence to Color it says the resolution is now 1920×1080 – is this correct even though in FCP it says HDV resolution of 1440×1080.

    Yes, ProRes will be square pixels, where the HDV wasn’t so that’s why the difference. Both would be 1080 though…

    just curious if my sequence settings will then be different when I send from Color back to FCP?

    Yes, they’ll come back to FCP as ProRes. You can select the codec from the Render settings in Color. Will not come back as HDV.
