HDV QT exports have poor playback
Posted by Joe Murray on December 31, 2006 at 10:45 amHi, I’m editing a 1080 50i project. Playback is good in full screen mode from within FCP, but when I export a movie with the same settings to QuickTime Pro playback is then jerky with visible stutters at the edits. Any ideas?

December 31, 2006 at 12:18 pmWhat are you exporting to? Are you playing the media off a fast hard drive or the system drive? We’re cutting an entire series in 1080i/50 DVCPro HD and don’t have any issues with QT exports playing off our media drives.

December 31, 2006 at 2:14 pmNot really sure then. HDV is a very weird codec and folks seem to have a lot problems with it that don’t affect other codecs. We convert all our HDV to DVCPro HD via the Kona card when we use that format.

If you don’t have a Kona card or a converter box, why not try exporting through Compressor to DVC Pro HD? It could take a while but it may work.

December 31, 2006 at 4:04 pmThanks Chris, I’ll give it a go, but wont the files be huge?

December 31, 2006 at 11:43 pmFiles won’t be that huge, DVC Pro HD is compressed, but it looks great.

January 2, 2007 at 11:32 amDid you try to set the QT player to”high quality”? Command-J. Click Video Track, and check the High Quality option.
Usually the QT plays at a medium quality.

Rafael
