I have an HDV project I need to export to HDcam for a film festival. They have asked for 1080 / 59.94i. They have also asked for it 16 x 9.
I have a kona LH card and am thinking of hiring an HDcam deck to export the project. Couple of things:
    1) should I not bother, just export the project to HDV and have it transferred elsewhere, if so would I loose much quality through recompression to HDV?
    2) If I do choose to go with the deck, how should I set up the timeline to export to HDcam 1080i
    3) Can I export HDcam 1080i at 16 x 9, I thought it was wider than that?

I know there has been a similar thread posted, I’m just looking for the answer to be spelled out to me before I rent a deck!

    Nope, 1920×1080 is 16×9 widescreen.

I would rent the deck and simply play your HDV timeline directly out to HDCAM via the Kona. If you’ve never used the deck before, tell the rental house exactly what you need to do and request that they set up all the menus for you before you receive it. The menus on all these HD decks can be daunting and the manuals often don’t offer a lot of help. So tell the rental house what system you’re using and exactly what format you need to record to and they should be able to set you up.

    Tom,

The 1080 in 1080i refers to vertical lines of resolution, not width. The width of HDV is 1280 squeezed, which becomes 1920 when unsqueezed.

As per outputing to HDCAM, this is exactly what your Kona card is all about. A one cable SDI solution should do the trick, with RS-422 deck control of course. I would suggest that you read the Kona manual and consider calling AJA support for assistance. The folks at AJA are very nice and very helpful. But, call them ASAP as most of their crew will be headed to NAB as early as this weekend.
