  • HDV project not showing all frames on external monitor

I’ve just started my first HDV project and I’m wondering if I’ve got some settings wrong or maybe my software/hardware isn’t up to snuff.

    I’m using a Mac Pro w/ 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 4 GB memory, OS 10.4.9, FCP 5.1.4

My 1080i60 footage is on a FW800 drive that was brought to me pre-loaded from an HDV deck. I’m using a DSR-11 to send to my HDTV for monitoring. When I’m playing the clips in the viewer or on the timeline (a 1080i60 sequence) it only sends the still frame I started on to the external monitor and updates it when I stop playing. Under the view menu: I’ve refreshed the a/v devices and I’m set to ‘show all frames’.
Can I not monitor HDV through a DSR-11? Do I need a PCI card to output HDMI? Do I need to upgrade to FCP 6? Or am I just missing a setting somewhere?

Additionally, I did some editing without the use of an external monitor and tried to export to a DVD to see how it turned out when played on a TV. I exported to Compressor set to ‘fastest encode 90 minutes – 16:9’. In the inspector I set the video format to 1080i60 (HDV res). Once compressed I tried to import the .m2v file into DVDSP and it said it was an incompatible format.

My apologies if I’ve drifted too far from the FCP forum topics into other areas, but I have a feeling this is where the issue lies. This project’s deadline is just a few days away so I’m in a bit of a pickle.
    Thanks!

You need an HD cpture card to monitor HDV. The cheapest way out is a Black Magic Intensity card together with an LCD using HDMI.

[Kenny Powerass] “I’m using a DSR-11 to send to my HDTV for monitoring.”

If SD devices such as the DSR-11 could send HD signals we’d have had HD a long, long time ago. That won’t work Kenny. Yu need to get yourself a HD card, camera, or I/O box to do that job.

[Kenny Powerass] “In the inspector I set the video format to 1080i60 (HDV res).”

That was an unneccesary step — when you chose ‘fastest encode 90 minutes – 16:9’ that set Compressor for the proper MPEG-2 encoding, you changed it to HDV, which is not part of the DVD spec.
