Footage to tape is compressed (DV inherent 5:1) but video camera out, directly to computer, is uncompressed (1:1)? This can’t be what you’re saying.

The Footage to tape on a HDV camera is compressed at about 25:1. DV is 5:1. Read the specs on the cameras. Some of the new HDV cameras offer HD-SDI out before the DSP which comresses the signal so it will fit on the mini dv tape. If you use this output on the set , you are getting an uncompressed HD signal that you can capture directly to your NLE system.

I see the Canon XL H1 has HD-SDI. Anyone here have experience with capturing uncompressed footage directly to computer?

Take it from me…. the little deck is your best all around bet. Your camera can still be used as a backup if you need. The little deck is tape transport is bulit for this kind of abuse. Yeah…. I know, its $3800 but…. its a worthy investment as compared to a camera being down for repairs. You can still tape events and use the camera if absolutely necessary.
