I just got a Sony HDR-HC7 (HDV Handycam) and I succesfully captured and edited short test videos in Vegas Pro 8. However, when I try to preview either the timeline or the source videos through firewire to the camcorder (which in turn is connected to the TV via HDMI) the Preview Device tab in Vegas preferences shows me “Hot pluggable device Device unavailable”. I checked that the cable is connected properly, and since I can capture with it it’s obvious that it’s working. Obviously I selected OHCI compliant device. I could preview using Windows secondary monitor since it’s also the TV set connected via HDMI, but that involves the annoying process of setting it up with the lousy Nvidia interface. Does Vegas not come with a module to preview HDV just like you do with DV? If not, then is there a 3rd party app to provide that functionality?

One more question, which is not totally related to Vegas, but it doesn’t hurt to ask. Has anybody here succesfully burned a DVD that uses the Blu-Ray file/folder structure (also referred to as BD9) with the source file being HDV? I made a 3x HD-DVD with DVD Studio Pro which the Toshiba HD-DVD player plays to some extent, but it chokes up because 25 Mbit/sec seems to be too much when coming from a regular DVD, although I have only tried with rewritables so far, maybe I’ll have more success with write-once DVDs. Basically after about ten seconds of playing smoothly it begings to stutter. If I press pause and then release it will go another ten seconds or so. So I would like to test the same thing on my Blu-Ray player, but so far my attempts to create a BD9 from a Mpeg 2 file without recompressing to AVCHD have been unsuccesful.

To Burn Blu ray in VPro8 you go:

Tools->Burn Disc-> Blu Ray Disc Then you have the choices of:
    -render Image & Burn BD
    -Render Image only
    -Burn existing image

and choice for Compression, including MP4 etc.

I actually burned a 1.5 hour BR image (18 GB). I burned the image with Sony BWU-100A and played it back with Sony BDP-300S. Both the Sony Burner and Player need to be upgraded with recent firmware upgrade from the Sony site, then they both work perfectly with homemade BD.

I was referring to BD9, a regular DVD with Blu-Ray file/folder structure that can be played on BR players. I don’t have a BR burner and it will be a long time before I do, since not only they are expensive, but so is the media. Once the media comes down to $5 a disc, then I’m in.
