Okay, since this is my first HDV project, I realize there is a lot I don’t know and/or understand yet. To be fair to myself, I’d like to start out with letting folks know that I was called on Monday afternoon to work Tuesday and Wednesday on a FCP system in a client’s office. There was no mention of HDV until after I got to the scene. I had worked with this client eons ago when I was on staff at a post house, but I’ve not had any contact with them for over 6 years.

The system they have is not set up properly, and I’m getting a sense that they bit off more than they needed in this HDV venture, and do not themselves understand the difference in workflow with HDV. It’s a dual 2.7 G5 running FCP 5.0.2. I don’t remember all the specs, and obviously, I’m not there at the moment! As I type this, I don’t have access to the FCP 5 manual, so please bear with me if some of this is a RTFM. Anyhow… It’s supposed to have a Kona card, which apparently isn’t functioning properly. I’ve been working for two days without external monitoring. They have a 14″ Trinitron. It could be an L1, but I’m guessing it’s an L5. I didn’t take the time to look. I had access to a small Sony HDV/DVCam/MiniDV deck. I do not know the model number. It had the LCD screen on the front and it’s about half the size of my DSR-45. I may not have access to that deck on Thursday. This is their first FCP system, their other edit systems are Discreet Edit.

What dawned on me is I don’t understand at what point this HDV signal gets downconverted to DV/NTSC. The producer mentioned that we’d be outputting to DVCam for the presentation. Everything was captured at the 1440×1080 HDV codec. This was done by the owner of the company days before I was brought on board. Basically, I need to know if this is a screwed up workflow that’s going to bite us in the tushie when it comes time to get this to tape.

So there’s the background. What do I do? I need to have an external monitor, and I need to be able to output to DVCam. How do I do this? I don’t want to throw up my hands and say,”It’s not my system, I don’t have any friggin’ clue!”, ‘cos that’s just bad for business! I would like to have real, well-informed answers to why this isn’t going to work and alternative ideas. Like can I output from FCP to the HDV deck and make a dub to DVCam?

    Anyone, please?!!?
