    I know this issue has been addressed over and over, but I still can’t seem to get it fixed on my project. I am currently running FCP 6 and an Intel 8 core Macpro (12GB ram and an internal 1.5TB raid) using a Blackmagic Decklink HD Card. I’ve combined DVCProHD and HDV footage on the timeline sequence set to DVCProHD. Output, using SDI to a Panasonic 1200A deck and converted to HDMI with the Blackmagic mini-converter, looks beautiful on the HD video monitor.

    Now the problem.

    I am using Toast 9 with the Blu-Ray plugin to create a Blu-Ray DVD for Playback on a PS3 80GB console. Upon playback I get horrible jitter during any left-right movement on the HDV footage. I’ve tried many of the solutions suggested here, but none are working. Exporting as a .wmv file solves the jitter, but then I get what looks like dropped frames as well as a lower quality picture. Part of my problem is also that the HDV footage was provided to me as preloaded data files on a DVD which I cannot re-load as Apple Pro-Res as some have suggested. Any new ideas? Thanks in advance.

    whats the frame rate?

    is the jitter only on the HDV or both?

    Toast9 isn’t very good at compressing, it should be done
    with compressor instead.

    Frame rate is 1080i for both formats, but the jitter only happens on the HDV shots.

    I’ll export with compressor, but to create a Blu-Ray disc, I only have Toast and the client is intent on having Blu-Ray.

    Also, the PS3 doesn’t recognize data files other than .wmv I’ve tried different .wmv exports, but the console will only playback sound if I use the default .wmv settings. Strange, because the sound is on the file when I playback on the desktop, and it is the same Windows 9 audio as the default. Nevertheless I get picture only when I export this way.

    you should be able to compress it with compressor to mpeg2 then
    author with Toast9.

    It’s fine for authoring, but compression is not good through it imo.

    ps3 can play wmv-hd but not wmv audio pro codec. try the non-pro basic codec.

    I agree with Chris.
    Make your MPEG-2 in Compressor and bring it to Toast.
    In Toast check the option so your MPEG-2 is not re-compressed.

    First, a big thanks to you guys. This was the solution to my problem. Exporting with compressor cleaned out the jitter and stutter frames and now plays back smoothly on the PS3. The picture quality has dropped out considerably, though. I used the HD DVD:MPEG-2 30 minutes settings and there is a lot more dirt around the edges. Does compressor have a better better setting for HD than this?

    I missed the bit rate settings and left them on default. Once I cranked them up to match the settings from compressor, the picture cleaned up and looks great.

    Hi Philip,
    H264 is also supported in BR and will gives you much better picture for the same data rate.
    What I’m not sure is if toast will be able to manage it and your PS3 will play it.

    quality at a reduced bit rate. (thats what its for) but
    at this moment it takes 3 to 4x longer to encode vs mpeg 2.

    but you can get stellar quality from high bitrate mpeg2 hd.

    copy that preset you used.

    set the minimum for 20mbps
    set the maximum for 25mpbs

    set the type of mpeg2 from hd dvd to blu ray

    set the gop for 7

    set the resize filter for highest quality (even though you are not resizing)

    this will yield absolutely awesome encodes for blu-ray.

    Right.
    H264 is more efficient than MPEG-2 at lower data rates.
    For high data rate files, MPG-2 works as good as H264 and is much faster to encode.
