    Hello all-

Not sure if this is a dumb question. Currently working in a DVCPro HD 1080i60 project and just received some source material shot on HDV at 24f. What is the best way to capture this material to work in my current sequence? We have a Kona LH card and a Sony HDW 1800 HDCAM deck (possible to use the deck to convert it on the way in?).

    Any help is appreciated.

The Kona can capture it as DVCPROHD… use the analog outs from the source HDV machine…

Jerry’s suggestion is good if that is the only way to port the signal from the equipment you have but it is digital to analogue back to digital conversion and not so great for quality. I believe the best digital solution would be to use a CANON H1 and send the Kona the HD-SDI signal if at all possible. This also keeps the Audio/Video together. FC can handle the rest on capture to get you to DVC Pro HD.

This is perfectly fine as we have done this for every HDV project brought into the shop. The difference between the HDV native captured material and the material captured DVCPro HD through our Kona 3 using the Analog outputs of our HDV machine are imperceptible. We use the AJA HD10AVA to convert that analog to HD-SDI because the Kona 3 doesn’t have analog inputs, but we’re still using the analog signal from the deck.

Since it’s a component signal, there’s very little loss going on here so there’s really no reason to go out of your way to get an HD-SDI signal if you don’t have one. There are also sony HDV decks with HD-SDI out, but since the Kona LH is installed into that suite, keep it simple and capture from the Component video outputs of the deck.

I was only trying to add my opinion for what I believe is the best possible all digital transcode and to add another alternative to the question. Quality is subjective right?
    Meaning what’s your opinion.

Jerry Hoffman has been incredibly generous to my self and so many others working with HDV and DCV Pro HD. Jerry has answered my emails and he even has taken my calls with questions. I believe Jerry has even given the same suggestion as I have here.

You say “there’s really no reason to go out of your way to get an HD-SDI signal if you don’t have one” and I said “Jerry’s suggestion is good if that is the only way to port the signal from the equipment you have”. I believe these statements to be the same. I never said to go purchase anything.

You have suggested you have only worked with analogue “for every HDV project brought into the shop”. I’m sure this is a solid flow and it works for your shop, but it is my opinion that you would see a difference with and the all digital way I suggested.

Please review the OP’s question “What is the BEST way to capture this material to work in my current sequence?” This was only my OPINION.
