    Hello,

I’m having a problem with the video that i imported into FCP 5 from my HDV camera. It looks pretty fuzzy and the picture is poor. I was hoping i could have help with the following questions:

    1. In Capture Preset, what’s the difference between the HDV capture preset and the HDV Apple Intermediate Codec preset? How do i know which one to use?

    2. Why does the playback look fuzzy? Do i have to change my sequence settings (Compressor: HDV 1080i x 60, what i shot at) or my

    3. I’m using an AJA box for playback to my monitor. How do i playback HDV in my monitor? Right now i’m using PROI NTSC US Component RGB. Will that work with HDV, or do i have to install new drivers?

    4. Once i have my HDV footage in Final Cut Pro and it is playing fine, how do i export it to a Digibeta for normal broadcast? I assume i’ll have to crop the picture.

I tried searching the forum for some of these answers but had no luck, so any help you guys could give me would be great. Thanks a lot.

[Jonathan Holm] “1. In Capture Preset, what’s the difference between the HDV capture preset and the HDV Apple Intermediate Codec preset? How do i know which one to use?”

The HDV capture preset means that it captures the footage in it’s native form…no further compression. The Apple Intermedia Codec compresses the footage further. It was a stop-gap measure for working with HDV until FCP 5 came out.

[Jonathan Holm] “2. Why does the playback look fuzzy?”

That is the nature of playback on the computer monitor. Footage requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. Normally you’d use an external monitor to view the footage and see what it really looks like. With HDV…that is a bit tricky…

This won’t work. You will need an HD capture card like those from Decklink to view this on an external monitor. The AJA onlyu works for SD footage…now you are in HD territory. The following is from the Decklink site:

“Blackmagic DeckLink v5.0 includes a host of new features including full support for all the new features in Final Cut Pro HD
