HDV in FCP 4.5 with Decklink Extreme Card
I have FCP 4.5 and would like to edit HDV. They say FCP 5 can only do HDV. But I have a Blackmagic Decklink capture card and with it, it gives me the option having a sequence with HDV (1080i60, 1080i50, or 720p30). Also in the capture settings I have the option to capture through the Decklink as HDV.
In the capture presets I have the following options
-Digitizer: Blackmagic NTSC/PAL
-Input: Blackmagic NTSC/PAL (8 bit or 10 bit)
-Compressor: HDV (1080i60, 1080i50, or 720p30)Does this mean I can edit HDV natively in FCP 4.5? Would I still capture via firewire? Or using the component connections on the Blackmagic card?

You cannot edit HDV native in 4.5. You can edit HD material if you capture your HDV material into an FCP 4.5 supported codec (such as DVCPRO HD and Uncompressed HD). What flavor of decklink card do you have? Not all decklinks are HD capable.

I have the Decklink Extreme PCIe model. Would I be able to capture HDV as DVCPro HD with the card? I’ve seen workflows advice and some people say converting the HDV native to DVCPro is much easier to edit with.

Not with an SD card as you have indicated.

But the HD version of the same card could capture HDV as DVCPro HD?
When I installed the software for the card it also updated FCP 4.5 with a bunch of extra sequence settings for HDTV, HDV and 2k settings. If it can’t do HD why did the software give me all those new settings? -

As long as your HDV deck and blackmagic card have the proper inputs and outputs and blackmagic uspports the frame rate your are capturing.

You have to ask Blackmagic about that one.

The settings are extra. You need to provide the appropriate hardware (capture card, RAM, RAID) in order to use the settings.

In short, I need final cut pro 5 to work with any HDV footage right?

Not really. You need an HD capture card to work with HDV footage in 4.5, and you need FCP 5 to work with HDV native.
