I am running vegas 8.1 on a vista 64bit machine. When I load on to the time line my hdv files I notice they seem to be softened abit.
I am using best and auto for the preview window setting.
The footage off the camera is very pristine so I know there is something amiss here. I have the project set at hdv60i which is what I used on the camera. I did notice while messing with preview window settings that if I chose best full the pristine quality comes back but will stutter when an effect is added.
I have an ATI 4850 card that came installed with the Dell computer and have all the latest bio and vid card updates.
Any clue to why the soft look of footage well appreciated. : )

    1. The stuttering effect is not related to your video card. Vegas is platform agnostic and really all that matters is the speed (and number) of your cpu’s and the amount of ram you have.

    2. The softness is a compromise. The further down the preview options you go, the lower the quality but the faster the frame rate.

    3. If you really need to see the full quality, you can do a ram preview and that will allow you view at full/best without the stutters- but this is limited by the amount of ram you have.

    4. You could also do a pre-render. This is not limited by ram, but if you make a change afterwards, you lose your rendered file and the choppy effect will return.

I usually watch mine in good/auto or preview/auto and when I need to really check an fx or mask, I will then go to Best/Full (I have a octo-core machine with 8 gigs of ram and I still use good or preview/auto).

Try using Preview-Auto in the Preview window…
that gives a true reference of the footage actual quality.
