My boss gave me a drive with a bunch of hdv footage and wanted to know if we’d be able to edit it. When I look at the clips in the finder, it says they’re 1920×1080. When I import them into FCP, it says they’re HDV 1440×1080. Bringing them into a timeline with the HDV 1080i60 sequence preset requires a render. I’m assuming that the guy who captured the footage used the wrong capture setting, which is why the finder says it’s 1920×1080, and that if I was to recapture at the correct HDV setting, it would work correctly and I wouldn’t need a render in the sequence. Am I on the right track here?

Have you tried setting up the time line to a custom apple intermediate timeline with res set at 1440×1080? If that works then it’s is finder that is confusing the issue.

You’re not wrong at all… HDV is a different format all together than anything we have ever seen. First of all, you need to know that HDV is a transport stream – not a video track with audio, therefore, HDV has to work differently. Its in a Log GOP structure that can create problems. Its extremely tough on the processor to encode and decode on the fly.

The best option for anybody doing HDV is to capture using a a capture card like the AJA Kona 2 or 3 or the Blackmagic Deklink cards. You can then capture into any codec you wish which is much much easier to deal with. Most people here use the DVCPRO HD codec because of its ease of use and savings on hard drive space.

Getting off the point a little gere but there are other options for capturing HDV:
    Lumiere HD – $179
DVHS (or AVC) Mpeg Stream Clip – free
