    Hi Folks
Im editing footage with Sony Vegas. Im after recieving footage that was recorded on a Canon HDV Camera onto DV Tape, and captured through Final Cut Pro.

The files were then put onto a DVD disc for me. They wont play on my PC. They will play on a Macintosh with no problems. How do I convert them; they arent even being recognized by the computer let alone the editing software.

Thanks in advance; the joys of editing! Sony Vegas rocks:)

Have you tried renaming a clip with the .M2T extension? This may be all that is needed. If it doesn’t work you can always change it back.

    Thanks Larry

I did, no difference. Strangely enough the small short clips will play, but Im not too impressed with the quality, a little choppy in places. The file extension reads .mov but the the big 3.5gb clip wont open at all or go into a convertor

First, be assured that Sony Vegas can and does play HDV footage. It is the format I use everyday and works for me as well as DVCam footage or any other format.

What version Vegas are you using?

Are you trying to import the HDV footage from the DVD data disk itself? if so, copy it to an faster internal hard drive, then import it.

What file extension do the clips display?

Do you know if there was any conversion of the files from the time they were imported from the tape cassette, til they got to you?

    1) Do you have quicktime installed on your PC by any chance? Apologies in advance if this is considered a d*mb*ss question on my part 🙂

    2) Is there any chance you can get the tape from the Canon camera and import it yourself? You should be able to use any HDV tape camera to capture it into Vegas.

    Larry,

I have all the files on my had drive now.

The files were put onto a DVD disc; a data disc. They have the extension .mov so I have a feeling they are Apple Pro Res files, and not compatible with Windows. Some of the files wont play audio properly.

I only know that they were captured using an Apple G5.

    Im running Vegas Pro 12

I actually just got a file converted to Mpeg2 using PavTube. Is this reccomended to keep the quality

Thanks for support here, much appreciated

    Nigel

I have but its a standard looking quicktime, its 7.7 I think, and I dont use it to play anything ever.

Good idea, and that would be the best solution but the tapes are gone!

    Thanks for your help

Neil, get them to re-do the renders and give you ProRes files. I know Vegas will play those as I get and use them all them a lot.

ProRes files are compatible with Vegas. I have the free version of QuickTime installed on my machine and it plays them with no problems at all.
Make sure you use an older version (I have 7.6.8) as several users have had problems with the latest one.
You need to open the file with the QuickTime player.
Then go Window > Movie Inspector and let us know what it says.
