  • HDV first time, problem with codecs

    Hello,
i was trying to find something about problems i have with my project, but unfortunately i found none, so please help me if you can.

I have footage shoot with Z1E in 1080i50 mode, there’s 7 hours of it and a lot more of work to come, so i thought i better ask before i’d have to put my entier project to trash.

I’ve captured 3 hours of it with Apple Intermediate Codec with 1080i50 setting on a MacBook Pro 2,13Ghz, and now i’m editing it on PowerBook G4 1,33Ghz. The playback works smooth and it cuts like a butter, but i have noticed that in some shots some black pixels apear on the right side. I thought it was only on playback, but when i’m moving trough those frames, the pixels are still there.

    So my question is ;-):
Have i done something wrong? I couldn’t find any information if AIC can be/should be used for capture. Maybe i should capture HDV and reencode for editing?

    Please help me.

I found the article about capturing HDV to ProRess via FireWire, and done that, everything looks great even thought i use my PowerBook G4 for capture and have to wait for ages for computer to proces after. But in the shoots with movement on the right side the same thing happened and those annoying black pixels apear.

    Does anyone had such problem?

OK, i’ve checked one more thing. I’ve exported my footage to DivX HD, and no black pixels were encoded, so i figured it is a glich in monitoring of the interlaced footage on a non-HD monitor, it must be it ;-).

    But still the question remains:
Is Apple Intermediate Codec good enough for capture and editing?
Please help me, i’m making a music video that’s going to be broadcasted on TV, it is very important for me to get the best quality i can with my limited resources ;-).

Przemek- I would edit HDV… export self-contained HDV movie and take to duplication house for HD Cam or DVCProHD dub. The dub house would need to have FCP with SDI video card and, of course, the video decks.

    Hi,
thx for advice, i will try to capture and edit HDV tomorrow on friends MBP, i tried to do that on my PowerBook once, but it’s definitely too slow. If it won’t work then i’ll go to ProRess HDV via FW.

As for output i’ll probably need only SD, so there’ll be no problem here, my only concern was if the AIC is good enough for capture and editing, well maybe i didn’t look good enough but i couldn’t find any information on that matter and right now i don’t have the HD monitor so i really can’t tell how it looks.

    OK, thx again ;-).
