Hi all I need to capture 50 hours of HDV, basic edit and deliver “at a minimum of 720P quality” I’m new to HDV and I am under the impression that I must deliver 25 blu-rays for 50 hours
(2 hours max per) Is that right?
    Regards

That’s not correct. The amount of time you can effectively put on a bluray disc is mainly dictated by the bitrate at which you encode the footage. The higher the bitrate, the less amount of time-based footage your BluRay disc will hold. the lower the bitrate, the more footage it will hold. This is where a compromise will come in. If it is nothing more than static shots (shots that have no, or very, very little movement) you can lower the bitrate significantly and it still look really good. If there is a lot of movement, you will have to have a higher bitrate to keep a quality look to your footage. You will need to experiment to see what bitrate will work for your footage. You could but 4 or 6 hours on a Bluray disc (or more even) but it may not look good at all depending on the bitrate and the type of footage that was shot in HDV.

Hopefully that will help get you started.

If you are going to deliver rough edits, I would recommend you mail the received a hard drive with your edits on it. You are correct that a 25GB Blu-ray will hold 2 hr 15 min of HDV footage. I assume your edits will reduce the 50 hrs somewhat but usually you would deliver such volume on a hard drive.

    John,

I am confused by the 2 hour 15 minute limit. Are you saying that this is the limit for a certain preset within Vegas? I know that you know (probably better than I) that you can increase the time allowed by lowering the bitrate or decrease it by upping the bitrate. What am I missing?

Sorry I wasn’t more specific. Blu-ray can hold 2:15 HDV 25Mbps. Since the question was specifically about rough editing HDV and delivering it to another editor. I assume he would want to maintain the 25Mbps bit rate of the original footage. Of course, he can reduce the bit-rate if he wants to get more video onto the disc.
