  • HDV Capture question: 1920×1080 or 1440×1080?

    Hello the COW!

Forgive me if this a dumb question, but my head hurts, so here goes:

I shot some HDV footage that I wanted to play with in After Effects. I shot the footage at 1080i60. In FCP5, I selected the HDV capture preset, and boom, started capturing some clips, no problem. However, when I open the Capture Scratch folder where the clips are stored, I see the clips are 1920×1080, and there is a lot of what appears to be artifacting in them. I had assumed the clips would be 1440×1080, no??

Pressing on, I dropped the HDV clips into a FCP HDV sequence that was 1080i60(1440×1080), and they played back beautifully in RT. So, I exported a clip from the timeline(thinking it would export at 1440×1080), but again, when I open up the exported clip, the frame size is 1920×1080, and it looks artifacty.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance!

I believe you are seeing the interlacing which many confuse as artifacting.
If you look at the footage on an NTSC monitor or deinterlace it does it dissapear?
The actual pixel information is 1440×1080 anamorphic.

Thanks, James. Deinterlacing the footage did help, but I’m still a little hazy on the pixel ratio/frame size situation.

When I open the HDV clips in After Effects, for example, AE tells me the clips are 1920×1080, with a pixel aspect ratio of non-square 1:33:1. The pixel aspect ratio makes sense, since I’m under the assumption that HDV is handled just like its smaller cousin, DV(4:3). But I don’t get the frame size. Why does HDV footage captured at 1920x1080i, play perfectly in a 1440x1080i FCP sequence? It’s got to be because HDV is anamorphic, right?

I’ve got to hit the books again tonight… 🙂

    Thanks!
    Jason

Because it is actually recorded at 1440×1080.
I am not sure that HDV is always anamorphic but the Z1 for sure records at 1440×1080 anamorphic.
