  • HDV Capture Problem in FCP 5

So I’ve been searching around the forums and though I’ve found a lot of information regarding my issue, I haven’t found the “magic bullet” fix or workaround.

I shot HDV then downrezzed to DV for an offline edit in FCP 5. I used this great article: https://library.creativecow.net/articles/battistella_david/recapturing_HDV.php to go from my offline DV edit to my online HDV edit. The problem is, whenever I try to capture the HDV, I get timecode errors.

There is not problem with the actual timecode on the tape (or else my DV capture would have had problems too) so I think its some sort of HDV GOP problem. Does anyone else have any solutions for this besides using the “Capture Now” feature (which we take me several additional hours of work)?

    Thanks.

Are you getting an error on capture that says the timecode cannot be located? If so, this issue is directly related to the Long GOP format and is easily fixed.

In FCP, go to Final Cut Pro > Audio/Video Settings. Click on the Device Control Presets tab. Scroll down to find the HDV preset you are using and Duplicate it. In the preset editor, change the Pre-Roll to 8 seconds, and the Post-Roll to 5 seconds. Rename the preset if you wish, then click OK. The new preset will be automagically selected. Click OK to exit out of the A/V Settings then start capturing.

DV and HDV file sizes are the same for the same lenth of video so you gain nothing by doing an offline in DV then onlining in HDV.

There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.
