    Greetings all-

I have a question hopefully someone might be able to shed some light on. When capturing HDV footage in FCP, there is a setting to toggle on if you want FCP to make a new clip at every start/stop point during recording. I recently purchased a Canon HV-40, and have been sucessful in capturing in all three methods (clip, now, and batch). However, I have not been able to get the above mentioned start/stop feature to work. Any ideas why?

    This is what I’m using:

    Mac Pro 2 X 2.8 Ghz Quad
    FCP 6.0.6
    Canon HV-40
    1080 24p HDV

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

    Brian-

    Hi Brian,
Not sure if that work with HDV (I don’t work with this format).
In the “Mark” menu you have “DV start stop detect”.

    Thanks Rafael-

yes, that capture setting is currently only available in FCP for the HDV codec (as far as I know). It’s in the capture settings tab when the log and capture window is open. Anyway, I was hoping that someone might be able to tell me if it’s a FCP issue, or my camera.

    Thanks for your input.

    Hey Ian-

Thanks for your response! So, if it’s a FCP issues, is there some sort of preference setting I need to adjust to make it work? I know this feature does work because I have seen it done in a couple of tuts. More specifically, I saw a person doing a capture with the “capture now” method. While the capture was happening, you could see FCP make and label a new clip in the bin every time there was a start/stop in the recording.

I greatly desire to do this so I can save wear and tear on my camera. I usually will capture the whole tape, and then go back and make sub clips of what I need (very time consuming).

Again, any help would be appreciated!

    Hi Brian,
Please have a look to this:

    https://www.dvinfo.net/conf/non-linear-editing-mac/86438-hdv-editing-w-fcp-importing-creates-new-clip-s-s-detect.html

They are trying to get rid of the Start/Stop detection. It may helps you to find the solution.
If not, Google “HDV Start Stop detection’, ther are few things.
    Cheers,
    rafael

Capturing to ProRes (which you should be doing anyway) will do what you want.

    Have a wonderful day.

Hey Chris-, Thanks for your reply! I followed the instructions on your tutorial, and was able to capture to ProRes just fine (also in real time, and not with any delay). The problem is, FCP is still not making a new clip at each start/stop. To remind you, my camera is a Canon HV-40. Any other thoughts as to why this might not be working?, Also, I was wondering if you could tell me why it’s better to switch HDV to ProRes? I have heard this before, but didn’t know what the advantages or ProRes, or disadvantages of HDV were., Any help would be greatly appreciated., Brian Bacardi-

Has anyone found an answer to this…
