  • HDV – capture card needed?

Posted by Ken Pugh on December 15, 2005 at 9:20 am

A newbie question – I’ve been working with FCP and DV happily for a couple of years but thinking of going HDV for the next project. Do I need a capture card? FCP5 claims its HDV native – does that mean I can edit using the computers built-in firewire interface and the Sony HDV edit deck? What would a card give me other than extra interface options (that I don’t at present need)? I’m content to monitor in SD for now, although a budget HD monitor solution would also be good to know about. LCD perhaps?

    Thanks, Ken.

You can capture HDV through FireWire, either from the camera or a deck with FireWire port (which they all should have).

    Todd is correct.

As for a “budget HD monitor solution,” I’m afraid that you are looking at close to $4,000 for that. $500 for a decklink HD card (As HDV cannot be monitored out thru firewire like DV can), and minimum $3500 for a very low end HD monitor.

i always edit using crappy monitors for the following reason.

    cost

and the idea that if it looks great on a crappy screen, then imagine what it must look like on a real monitor.

OK, but can you edit with it as well, in real time, without any hardware assistance – and if so, do you get the same level of real-time functionality I’ve come to expect from using the dv-25 (SD) codec?

This depends on your setup. I have a G5 Dual 2.0 and I was able to work with it in realtime. You probably won’t get quite the realtime support that you get with DV25, but that is to be expected. As resolution increases, realtime capabilities decrease.
